Dimmed lights create a welcoming ambiance. The sounds of both Katy Perry and Frank Sinatra can be heard. Dancers alternate between partners and genres with each song. Every first and third Friday of the month, the Ballroom Performance Group at the University of Georgia hosts a Friday Night Dance.
Dancers, both trained and novice, gather in the New Dance Theater to learn new moves and dance to a variety of music in an array of styles. But BPG does much more than just host dances for the community.

Imagine Athens is a bubble. Are you happily floating in the unpredictable winds? Or are you frantically looking for the exit in the colorful film surrounding you?
Some find Athens as a vacuum, free from pressures to join Corporate America. Others may find that even in this artistically inspiring town, you can’t escape the dark cloud of a “real career” from hovering over you. Kite to the Moon drummer and vocalist Andrew Hanmer paints the picture of a typical styling session for the three-piece, pop-punk glamour group.
“Timi poses, Jay makes faces and I put on makeup,” Hanmer says.
When they are not in the mirror perfecting their vintage-gone-wild looks, Hanmer, Timi Conley and Jay Rodgers combine wacky off-the-wall styles with power-punk glitter sounds to make up Kite to the Moon, an Athens-based band that debuted at the Athens Human Rights Festival in 2007.

The lights were low and the music was raging. Sorority girls and fraternity guys filled the Classic Center for one of the biggest and most well-known Greek events of the year. It was 7:30 pm on Wednesday, Oct. 20, and up-and-coming musical artist J*Midd took the stage. The sold out crowd went crazy; it was time for Greek Grind 2010.
